How the Centre will meet its objectives

Saturday 21 May 2005

The Wrightington Patient Information Centre has a number of key objectives, and is aimed at a variety of different audiences.

  • To educate patients, reassure them and gain their consent
  • To enable patients and their families to make informed decisions in partnership with hospital staff
  • To provide a centre for specialist research within the hospital's unique archive
  • To create a valuable resource for schools by close alignment with the National Curriculum
  • To aid recruitment into the NHS and promote careers in healthcare
  • To promote the hospital itself, its practices and ethos
  • To promote the work of the John Charnley Trust

To demystify the entire process, from referral to rehabilitation, the concept of the Patient's Journey has been developed.

The ground floor area leads the patient through the journey that their treatment will follow. Specific areas deal with Referral; Outpatients/Consultation; X-ray; the waiting list; Pre-Operative Assessment; Admission; Theatre Reception; the Anaesthetic Room, The Operation, Recovery, The High and Low Dependence Wards, Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Going Home, Social Work, Rehabilitation.

The roles played by various hospital staff in the joint replacement process are clearly explained.

Additionally the risks and rewards of surgery are highlighted.

  • Infection, its prevention and cure.
  • Component failure and revision surgery.
  • Audio visual testimonials and personal recollection by patients and clinicians
  • The life expectancy of the implant

Finally close attention is paid to Wrightington's role in the development of bone and joint surgery and above all the work done here by Sir John Charnley.

The Patient's Journey has been designed from the point of view of the cautious patient and the curious patient. Naturally, some people are squeamish, so the exhibit is colour coded with information of a more general nature presented in one style and more detailed information in another. The visitor can choose which path to follow and avoid areas that may cause them concern.

Wrightington has treated many top sports teams and stars and is very proud to include a sports medicine section which will particularly appeal to the young visitor. The collection includes signed shirts from the Liverpool 2005 European Cup winning team, Steven Gerrard's shirt, Jason Robinson's England Rugby Union shirt, and now a signed bat and England shirt from England cricket captain Andrew Flintoff.
